About Plain Speak Bookkeeping
Hi, I’m Sarah — and I got here the same way most of my clients did.
It started with my own finances. Like a lot of people, I knew I should understand where our money was going — I just didn’t. So I sat down, started learning, and eventually got certified as a bookkeeper. What I found surprised me: this stuff doesn’t have to be confusing. It just needs to be explained in plain English.
That’s what led me to start Plain Speak Bookkeeping.
The problem I kept seeing
I noticed that a lot of small business owners were paying for bookkeeping — and then barely looking at the reports because they didn’t know what they were looking at. A Profit & Loss statement would land in their inbox, they’d glance at the bottom line, and move on. Meanwhile, there were real insights sitting in those numbers: what was actually making them money, what was quietly draining it, and what to do differently.
That gap — between having the numbers and actually understanding them — is exactly what Plain Speak is built to close. I don’t just deliver reports. I explain what they mean and what they mean for you.
Who I love working with
My favorite clients are people who are great at what they do and genuinely hate dealing with the financial side of running a business. Coaches, consultants, freelancers, service providers — people who started their business because they love their work, not because they wanted to become an accountant. What I do differently
Most bookkeepers hand you numbers. I hand you answers. Every month, you get clean, organized books and a plain-English explanation of what those numbers are telling you — what’s working, what to watch, and what might need your attention. You shouldn’t need a finance degree to understand your own business, and with me, you won’t.
A little about me outside the spreadsheets
I’m married with three young girls (and a dog who has strong opinions about everything). When I’m not working, you might find me at a tabletop gaming table, chatting with anyone who’ll have a conversation, or slowly but steadily learning Spanish — poco a poco. I like people, I like solving problems, and I genuinely enjoy talking about money in a way that doesn’t make people’s eyes glaze over.
